Welcome to Cushendun Old Church!

church picIn 2006 Cushendun Building Preservation Trust (CBPT) was established to try to save Cushendun Old Church and develop its future as a broad-based community and arts centre.  The project got off to a flying start when the building was selected to take part in BBC2’s Restoration Village series. Thanks to a terrific effort on the part of the local community, the church was regional winner for Northern Ireland. In June 2013, after lengthy negotiations with the Church of Ireland Representative Church Body, a fifty-year lease was formalised and CBPT is now the official lessee of the building.

Set just outside the National Trust village of Cushendun, this beautifully simple red sandstone church is one of the landmark buildings in the area. It was built in 1842 for the new Church of Ireland parish of Cushendun but by the end of the last century the congregation had dwindled and in 2003 the church was deconsecrated.

The Old Church will need sympathetic restoration/conversion before it can begin its new life as a versatile and sustainable arts and community space. CBPT is exploring a number of project-development and funding options, and now that the lease is confirmed it can move forward with greater confidence. In December 2014 we are delighted to reveal that we have been successful in obtaining funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.  Please CLICK HERE to read more.
